DISORDER: Blister Beetle Poisoning
Plant Species: Primarily alfalfa hay.
Causes: Blister beetles contain cantharidin.
Mode of Action: Cantharidin causes necrosis of all mucous membranes.
Animal Symptoms: Colic, urinary infection (frequent urination); dehydration, shock and death.
Conditions: Beetles tend to swarm alfalfa when in full bloom. Harvest conditions that crimps/cuts or traps beetles in hay.
Treatment: None; fluid therapy to combat dehydration shock
Prevention: Avoid cutting when beetles are present.
Notes: Can affect all classes of livestock, but most cases are reported in horses.
