DISORDER: Fog Fever or ABPE (Acute Bovine Pulmonary Emphysema)
Plant Species: Bermudagrass
Causes: Amino acid - 3-methylindole
Mode of Action:
L-tryptophan is degraded in the rumen to IAA indole acetic acid, which can be converted to 3-methylindole (3-MI) by some ruminal microbes. 3-MI is absorbed into the bloodstream and is the source of pneumonotoxicity
Animal Symptoms:
Pneumonia-like like symptoms labored breathing and extension of tongue
Conditions: Occurs on lush green bermudagrass pastures, typically in the fall
Treatment: Remove cattle for two weeks, with extreme caution not to cause animals to run and cause labored breathing, as this will result in sudden death
Prevention: Feed monensin
Notes: More common with mature beef cows, but others are susceptible
