| Causes: |
Saponin, which is a photodynamic agent. |

| Mode of Action: |
UV light induces the development of an activated state in the saponin which is responsible for all damage. |
|
| Animal Symptoms: |
Reddening of skin followed by swelling, blisters, and sloughing of the skin. In severe cases it can lead to death. |
|
| Conditions: |
Occurs in sheep. |
|
| Treatment: |
Remove animal from infected pasture (provide shade & feed). |
|
| Prevention: |
Don't graze sheep or horses on Kleingrass. |
|
| Notes: |
Horses may develop liver lesions, but not photosensitization. |
