DISORDER: Photosensitization
Plant Species: Kleingrass
Causes: Saponin, which is a photodynamic agent.
Mode of Action: UV light induces the development of an activated state in the saponin which is responsible for all damage.
Animal Symptoms: Reddening of skin followed by swelling, blisters, and sloughing of the skin. In severe cases it can lead to death.
Conditions: Occurs in sheep.
Treatment: Remove animal from infected pasture (provide shade & feed).
Prevention: Don't graze sheep or horses on Kleingrass.
Notes: Horses may develop liver lesions, but not photosensitization.
