- Oats are generally more productive than other small grains in the fall, however it lacks cold tolerance and may winter kill in some years.
- Since oats do not require vernalization (cold temperature requirement to switch from vegetative reproductive phase) they can be planted in the spring to obtain grain crop.
- Fertilizer recommendation: After soil test. Usually apply N after oats are up (2-3 leaf stage) 60-80 lb N/ton of forage. Apply your phosphorus down with the seed.
